Our New House.

We are proud owners of an Eichler house in Cupertino, California. We are very excited about the new house.

This house was built by famous builder/developer Joseph Eichler. Joseph Eichler developed these modern, mass-produced houses from 1950s to 1970s. Targeted for the middle-class family, Eichler’s signature feature was integration of the indoor and outdoor space. This was achieved by liberal use of glass and use of atrium or courtyards in the house. These Houses are usually painted with earth tones colors accented by bold colors on the doors and windows. Typically, you will see a wall in front of the house and a low-profile, closer to ground house built behind the wall. Eichler houses are distinctive in their appearance even today.

The demographic of our neighborhood is very interesting. Our neighbors are mostly senior citizens who have lived in the house for many years or young families with kids who have recently moved in. Neighbor's liking is very distinct and apparent – there is a Toyota Prius or a hybrid car parked in front of every other house!

Eichler house has its own disadvantages. There is no crawl space and no attic. There aren't centralized ducks for heaters and coolers. The plumbing is run under concrete slab. The radiant heat is also buried under concrete slab. This leads to significant issues. Repairing the leakage is an issue. Any leakage will result drilling the concrete and floor. Remodeling baths or kitchen also involves major work. Running wires/pipes is simply impossible. Most significantly, the floor-to-ceiling glass is major safety hazard.

Like any niche product, people who love it, love it. People, who hate it, can't stand sight of it. For us, Eichler represents quintessential of Californian living. We look forward to enjoying the new house.
